PhD defense@UFRJ: Márcio M. Taddei — 13.02, 13hPosted: February 11, 2014
One of the most important jobs of the scientific community is to form new good scientists. Here at the quantum information groups in Rio we take that very seriously. Going towards this goal, this Thursday we’ll have Márcio M. Taddei (IF-UFRJ) PhD defense. His thesis is entitled “Quantum speed limits for general physical processes”, and he was advised by Ruynet L. Matos Filho (IF-UFRJ).
What he and his teammates did was to crafted lower bounds for the time necessary for a state to evolve under the most general physical process. Previous results, like the well-known Mandelstam-Tamm bound, only dealt with unitary dynamics. This extension was possible by employing tools from quantum metrology, and by developing a lot of intuition from differential geometry applied to the state space.
While we wait for the result of the defense and hopefully for the final version of the thesis, you can check some of Márcio’s results in the article Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 050402 (2013) [arXiv:1209.0362]
The defense is open for anyone willing to attend it. It will take place at the UFRJ’s physics department, room A-343. See you there!
